Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a wonderfully whimsical childrens' story from the husband and wife duo of Judi and Ron Barrett, 1982. I remember discovering it and sharing it with my students in 1986. They "ate it up!" (pardon the pun!). Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a modern tall tale; in the town of ChewandSwallow, the weather brings all the food that residents need. Instead of rain and snow, pie, hotdogs, spaghetti and fried eggs rain down. It's a great thing, until the weather turns stormy. The school is covered with a giant pancake, homes are ruined by oversized pickles and businesses closed due to snowdrifts of cream cheese and jelly sandwiches.
Happily, cartoonists and filmmakers have elected to create a feature length cartoon based on Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. The story has been added and developed to fill a movie. I'm pleased to note that Ron Barrett's original illustrations have been faithfully used in the cartoon. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs offers the perfect tall tale for reading and enjoyment in the classroom.
